With its tight ramps, short acceleration-deceleration lanes and a lack of shoulders along many sections, the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway is a nightmare of a road to drive. As the only truck route available between central New Jersey (and points south) and Long Island, the drive can be a bit intimidating and even scary, as evidenced by the sharp curves and low clearances.

However, the impressive views of the Manhattan skyline make the drive almost worthwhile. Be sure to experience the tiered section of the BQE underneath the Brooklyn Heights Promenade to get a close-up view of Upper New York Harbor and Lower Manhattan.

The expressway is being rebuilt through Queens, so the safety and pavement condition scores along the rebuilt section should rise once the project is finished.
