Technically, the Gowanus Expressway is part of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, but it was built originally as the Gowanus Parkway. Although it was rebuilt in the late 1950's and early 1960's as part of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge project, the Gowanus Expressway is only nominally an Interstate highway. Deficiencies in safety, pavement conditions and signing abound. However, these conditions may exist for just a while longer, as this section will be either rebuilt as a viaduct, or placed underground (like a "Big Dig" for Brooklyn).

The Gowanus Expressway traverses a mostly industrial area (Sunset City / Industry City), and to the south, cuts through the heart of Bay Ridge (and still causes heartache for longtime Bay Ridge residents). Before the expressway ends, the majestic Verrazano Bridge becomes visible.
