Originally intended as a route between the Throgs Neck Bridge and Kennedy Airport as part of the abandoned I-78, the Clearview Expressway performs well as its function as an important truck link between Long Island and points north, because it is the first fixed link for Long Islanders that is available. It is one of the few Interstate highways within the five boroughs that was built to modern Interstate standards, though the interchange at EXIT 4 (I-495 / Long Island Expressway) is a bit underpowered. Finally, the Clearview Expressway is a good alternate route for cars to the always congested Cross Island Parkway, though you'll have to compete with trucks (particularly on the ramps between the Clearview and Long Island expressways). Too bad it ends abruptly at a traffic light at Hillside Avenue (NY 25)!

The expressway traverses a mix of parkland, single-family homes and condominiums, but on the northbound lanes one is treated to a full view of the Throgs Neck Bridge. During the past decade, improvements to signing, pavement and other safety measures have brought up the overall score of the road.
