The Cross Island Parkway is an important link between Long Island's east-west roadways and the Throgs Neck and Bronx-Whitestone bridges, and consequently, it is a quite congested one. Like the other parkways of the Robert Moses era, the Cross Island Parkway suffers from underpowered ramps, inadequate shoulders, non-existent acceleration / deceleration lanes, and missing connections between major highways. Missing signs also make the parkway a bit tough to navigate.

Aside from these problems, the pavement is very smooth thanks to an extensive rehabilitation of the parkway's pavement in recent years. Improvements to lighting also were made during this time.

What brings up the overall score for the parkway is the parkway's breathtaking vistas. Coming out of the deep forests of Alley Pond Park, motorists are treated to a view of Little Neck Bay and Long Island Sound before arriving at the grandeur of the Throgs Neck Bridge.
