The Sunken Meadow Parkway continues the route of the Sagtikos Parkway to the North Shore. It serves as a functional (if congested) route between the Northern State Parkway and EXIT SM3 (NY 25 / Jericho Turnpike), and could use an additional lane in each direction along this two-mile-long stretch.

As soon as most of the congestion clears at EXIT SM3, one gets the sense that it is not too far from Sunken Meadow State Park: now the parkway shifts from "functional" to "recreational." The concrete "Jersey" barrier begins to give way to a wide grassy median that separates the two roadways. A heavily wooded buffer separates the parkway from suburban developments. As the parkway ends just north of EXIT SM5 (NY 25A) in Kings Park, down the hill lies the park and Long Island Sound. It is very easy to see Connecticut from this point.

Signing and lighting were improved during the late 1980's, but the pavement is not in great condition. The problem is more acute south of EXIT SM3, where there is more traffic, than along the less congested northerly stretch of parkway.
